About us

Early Years Foundation Stage

At Mells Nursery we offer a broad and balanced outlook on early education, which is based upon the Early Years Foundation Stage and the seven areas of learning and development. All children are given equal access and opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding in:

The prime areas:

  • Personal, social & emotional development

  • Communication and language

  • Physical development

The specific areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive arts and design

All children learn through play with a mixture of child initiated and adult led learning opportunities. Learning takes place both indoors and outdoors, the doors are always open, we have Wellingtons, umbrellas and rain suits. We plan in the moments by observing a child's interests. We gradually introduce phonics and the basics of literacy for children that are ready for the next stage of learning. We follow the government initiative Letters and Sounds, Phase 1 and this introduces the perfect base for learning to read and write. Numeracy is introduced through different activities, such as counting games, weighing activities and measuring - mostly this is taught through play, inside and outside of the classroom.
